Chada Katavi

Chada Katavi

Katavi is as dramatic as anywhere you'll ever see, and this is what we try to reflect. Life as an adventure, the world as a living, breathing thing: Man as a detail.

Katavi National Park remains one of the greatest wildlife experiences of Africa. Miles from anywhere, it has an almost mythical status and, it’s thought, a greater density of mammals than any other Tanzanian reserve. Rivers groan with hippopotamus and crocodiles, and massed on the plains are the last great herds of buffalo in East Africa, up to 1000 head.

Chada is the original Katavi camp. A place of phenomenal diversity of big African game, it is also far enough off the beaten track as to be almost off the map.  That's why we love it.

From our little hideaway on the edge of the Chada Plains we venture out into this wild place, walking, driving and fly camping under the stars. With such an incredible abundance of wildlife in Katavi, famed for its huge pods of hippos and cave building crocodiles there is so much to witness and marvel at.

Need to Know

Chada Katavi operates as a seasonal camp and is only open from June - mid November. It is best accessed using our Nomad Tanzania shared charter flight from Arusha, which only operates on Mondays and Thursdays and continues on to Mahale National Park, and Greystoke Mahale. It can also be linked with the Southern parks of Tanzania such as Selous and Ruaha using Safari Airlink flights which again only operate on Mondays and Thursdays.

From Chada Katavi we offer game drives, walking safaris and fly camping.

Wildlife HighlightsWildlife Highlights

Some of the biggest herds of elephant and buffalo left anywhere in East Africa, very healthy lion and leopard populations and particualry famous for hippos and crocodiles which aestivate in caves dug out of the river bank in the dry season.

Customised 4x4 open vehicles with fridge and charging stations, expert guides, an open lounge and dining tent with views of passing wildlife on the Chada Plain.

Our camp is made up of six beautiful large, airy en-suite tents with a big verandah, twin or double beds with fresh linen and a pioneering style.  There's a place to hang clothes, a bureau, chairs on the verandah on which to sit and enjoy the sounds and sights of the bush.  Bathrooms are en-suite, and open to the canopy.  Safari-style bucket showers lend a sense of adventure and help us keep our environmental footprint small in this area of scarce water.  There's also an eco-flush toilet which is both convenient and uses relatively little water.

The tents are scattered among a grove of tall tamarind trees, which in turn attract monkeys, elephants and other wildlife. It's not uncommon to watch a herd of impala wonder by while you're enjoying a cup of tea on your verandah, or have an elephant walk past while you have a siesta.
