Laikipia Wilderness

Laikipia Wilderness is a small and personal bush camp with just 5 tents catering for 10 guests, en suite open air bathrooms with hot and cold running water. The camp has beautiful views of Mt Kenya and the wilderness and blends sympathetically into this stunning area of true wilderness.

Stunning scenery and some of the best wildlife in Laikipia, this is amazing walking country and the huge range of activities on offer allows action packed days as well as traditional game viewing. In between walks and game-drives, meals are often enjoyed by the river followed by swimming, fishing and rafting. Fly-camping under the stars is standard and if you just want to follow wildlife and take photos, this is the best place to see wild dogs in Kenya. Elephants and leopard are also highlights. Laikipia Wilderness aims to deliver a real experience of the bush, seen from the ground as well as by vehicle.

Need to Know

A small family run camp complete with the owner’s two children, dogs and cat, sometimes wild animals too. The atmosphere is friendly and informal, all the guests join together at meal times but there are plenty of vehicles and guides to allow for different interests with such a huge range of activities to choose from. There is a strong emphasis on excellent food as well as following wildlife and all the activities here. Healthy fresh ingredients are thrown together by home trained chefs creating excellent safari cuisine full of colour and flavours.

Game drives in open backed 4WD vehicles, night drives and walking safaris led by Steve Carey who has 20 years of walking experience and his team of local guides.

Wildlife HighlightsWildlife Highlights

Probably the best wild dog sightings in Kenya and having followed our local pack for 7 years they have become accustomed to being approached closely which enables us to observe their behaviour and take some great photos. (Please take out the first line in there and replace with this as sometimes they are not all to ourselves as our neighbours come and bother us!)

Local ActivitiesLocal Activities

We offer game drives and walking safaris which can be focused on specific interests such as photography, tracking game on foot, following specific species and watching animal behaviour. We also do night drives, rafting, rock climbing, fishing, visits to the local Samburu villages and fly camping under the stars.

We have just 5 tents all en suite, some tents are close together specifically for families and all our tents can comfortably sleep three people, and even a double and two singles for families with younger children. Each tent is built on a platform with a private veranda and behind the tent an en suite bathroom made of natural materials which is partially open to the skies allowing you to shower under the stars. Hot and cold running water offers just that little bit of extra comfort in the bush. The large mess tent is the central reception area with dining room, sitting room and library. Outside there is an open veranda on a wooden deck where we gather at night. There is a viewing point with a campfire where we often eat under the stars. We can also arrange for private family dinners or romantic meals for couples and as many meals as possible are had outdoors where you see and hear that much more of the wildlife around you. We have 240 volt solar power in the rooms 24 hours a day and a charging area in the mess tent for recharging camera batteries. There is telephone signal in parts of the camp strong enough to collect emails on a phone but patchy enough that no-one is disturbed by the outside world.

We are closed in May only.
