Mutamaiyu House was built as a private family home 19 years ago on the breathtaking Mugie Conservancy in Laikipia - Kenya's High Country. Since then, Mutamaiyu has been extended to enable her to accommodate guests who can also experience her charms. Abundant in wildlife, Mugie Conservancy boasts many endangered species & a host of activities including a golf course!

Need to Know

Power is supplied through a generator and solar power stored in inverter systems. Water is solar heated & piping hot. The generator is run every evening allowing guests to use the provided hair dryers if required, as well as charging the batteries.

Safaris are in safari-equipped Land Cruisers with roof hatches allowing 360 degree views. Guides are experts on both birds & wildlife and enjoy sharing their knowledge with guests.


Wildlife HighlightsWildlife Highlights

46,000 acres of pristine African bush, home to abundant wildlife including endangered Grevy's zebra, Jackson's hartebeeste and, at certain times of year, wild dog. Reticulated giraffe, buffalo, warthog, Thomson & Grant's gazelle, eland & dik diks are found in abundance. The big cats are also present. Some lion are collared for research by the Laikipia Predator Project & guests can enjoy the thrill of tracking these majestic beasts.

In addition to game drives & bush walks, guests can also enjoy a range of activities during their stay at Mutamaiyu House:- Mugie School, although a government school, is sponsored by Mugie Conservancy and consistently receives the highest scores for the region and one of only a handful offering boarding facilities for special needs children. A visit to the school is an uplifting experience. Mugie has a team of bloodhounds assisting with community security & anti-poaching. Guests are able to visit the dogs and learn more about their training & abilities and even experience being tracked. A visit to the ranch headquarters offers an interesting insight into the day to day operations of a 46,000 acre ranch. The workforce includes carpenters, mechanics, herdsmen and even a nurse with a fully equipped clinic.

The sitting room & dining room's huge windows also offer spectacular views of the water hole & beyond. All cottages, dining room, sitting room & verandah have log fires for chilly Laikipia evenings.
