Tassia Lodge

Tassia lodge captures all elements of the Kenyan bush and is an ideal escape for those searching for a taste of unspoiled Africa. Set in a stunning wilderness area, situated on the 60,000 acre Lekurruki Community Ranch; it gives a spectacular and breathtaking view of the Northern Frontier District towards Samburu and its neighbours, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Borana Ranch.

Perched dramatically on the edge of a rocky bluff, which protrudes from the Mokogodo escarpment and overlooks a valley filled with Acacia and Newtonia trees. Staying at Tassia means removing yourself from the world as you know it (no tv, no internet, no cell reception) – whether walking through the bush or scrambling up to the caves where the Maasai used to live, you will not meet another car or tourist.

Need to Know

Tassia lodge and the 60,000 acre Lekurruki conservancy, on which it is situated is owned by a community of mukogodo Masai. Tassia and Lekurruki are part of a network of community owned eco lodges and conservancies under the Northern Rangeland Trust – http://www.nrt-kenya.org/lekurruki

Tassia is the only lodge on this conservancy allowing its guests complete privacy in a wilderness area largely untouched by tourism. The lodge was constructed in 2000, opening its doors to guests in June 2001.

Tassia has been a premier tourist destination in northern Kenya, incorporating the true spirit of the unspoiled African bush. The lodge employs 90% of its staff from the Lekurruki Group Ranch, and provides valuable revenue for the conservancy, split between the annual operating costs (40%) and community projects such as water pumps, school bursaries and infrastructure (60%).

A big focus at Tassia is walking safaris.

Walking is the true and purest way to explore and experience the bush.

With no pollutants of sound and smell, or the relative safety of a vehicle. The reality of how small we are in such a vast landscape hits home.

One might at first experience a sensory overload. A cocktail of scents, sights and sounds none of which you can differentiate. With each walk, you learn a few of the ingredients, which make up this cocktail of the life you are experiencing.

The diversity of the walks can satisfy all. From gentle botanical walks, learning the traditional uses and medicinal properties of plants. Short Cave walks to see where members of the community used to live. More vigorous bush walks, tracking wildlife and learning bush craft. Forrest walks, to soothe the soul and enjoy the calming effects of a Forrest.

For those that really need to stretch the legs and explore further, there are numerous hills, mountains and ridges healthy enough to exhaust the intrepid.

We also offer game drives which are often combined with a walk. Horse riding safaris can also be arranged.

Local ActivitiesLocal Activities

Tassia is fantastic place to be directly in touch with the Mokogodo Maasai tribe and to get out of the vehicle and walk, hike, ride, swim, throw spears, visit the Maasai village, have a picnic breakfast or dinner in the bush.

At Tassia the game is truly wild and can often be well dispersed, which makes tracking with your guide on foot more exciting. The amount of game is dependent on the water in the area. Tassia sits perched on the cliff top positioning itself perfectly to maximize the spectacular view. We have six spacious rooms which are moulded into the natural surroundings. Each room has it’s own individual design working around the rocks and trees already present at the time of building.

All rooms are en suite with their own shower and loo with extraordinary views out to the surrounding bush. It isn’t every day you can watch elephants while enjoying a refreshing shower! The rooms can also be adapted for families, couples and single travelers.
The side of the room facing the view is completely open, giving an unobstructed view of the wilderness and wildlife below. Lying in bed with that view laid out in front of you, to watch the sunrise rise or the millions of stars that fill the sky at night is very special.

Other features of the lodge include a horizon swimming pool with a sunbathing deck, dining room, bar, chill out and deck area and roof top platform. Meals are served communally dotted around the lodge.
