Wildlife HighlightsWildlife Highlights

Kololo Game Reserve, situated in the Waterberg area
The Waterberg is a beautiful nature area with a wide variety of landscapes and wildlife. The area has been declared a biosphere reserve by the UNESCO. Kololo Game Reserve is a member of the "Waterberg Biosphere" project, which means that the reserve must meet strict requirements in order to protect nature. These requirements include that one ensures that the original state of the park is maintained, that there are economic and ecological measures for protecting nature, and that work is being done to combat local poverty in which education plays an important role. The Waterberg is a geographical wonder which supports a biome of some 14 500 square kilometers and encompasses vast tracts of bushveld, punctuated with clusters of trees and tall savannah shrubs. Mountains, gorges, cliffs, open fields, wetlands, streams and rivers, give rise to a rich diversity of flora which supports the animals and birds that thrive in this area. The animal and plant life on Kololo Game Reserve The magnificent diversity of the Waterberg is evident both in the natural environment and in the facilities and attractions. Kololo Game Reserve spreads over 3000 hectares of untouched African bush which consists of open savannah grass plains, thick bushveld, mountains and valleys, making it the ideal habitat for a wide variety of game. View impala, kudu, rooi hartebeest, blue wildebeest, zebra, eland, nyala, waterbuck, giraffe, blesbuck and bushbuck as well as smaller species such as duikers, mountain reedbuck, klipspringer, steenbok, bushpig and warthog. Bird watchers will enjoy over 300 species of birdlife which are indigenous to the area. The landscape of Kololo is covered with an abundance of indigenous shrubs and trees. They form part of the backdrop of this scenic region and are an integral food source for the various animal species living in the area. There are 84 different species of trees listed. These include Ficuses, Combretums, Rhuses, Acacias, Maroela, various cultivar of Aloe and Tamboti. For the convenience of our guests, these trees are identified along some of the walking and cycling routes on Kololo. Wild flowers and grasses abound and each season sees the bushveld covered with bright splashes of colour that will delight and inspire you. See Mother Nature at work as she changes her canvas along with the seasons. Approximately 500 species of plants have been recorded in the Waterberg plateau and provide rich vegetation on which the game and birdlife thrive.

The Reception
Kololo guests are welcomed in our new reception area, built in 2011. In this building there is a large desk, a reception area for guests, a large office and a curio shop. In the curio shop guests can buy caps, shirts and other clothing, decorated with the Kololo logo. There is also a nice collection of local souvenirs that we sell to support the local community.
With the construction of the new reception the stream that ran in front of the old reception is restored to its former glory. The water in this stream comes from the river and runs down completely by natural decay. It runs along the reception and then debouches into the dam. Here, the animals can enjoy the refreshing water right in front of the reception.

Wheelchair Friendly
A safari is not the first thing people with physical disabilities have in mind. Yet at Kololo it is possible! The team of Kololo Game Reserve considers it very important that Kololo is accessible for everyone. Therefore in 2010 one of the chalets, Kudu, a two-persons chalet, was renovated and made completely wheelchair friendly. The chalet is centrally located next to the restaurant and swimming pool, both accessible via illuminated, concrete paths. A wide entrance, no thresholds, a large shower with taps at the entrance, separate toilet and plenty of room to move, make Kudu perfect for people in a wheelchair who want to enjoy the beauty of Africa.

One fear that wheelchair users often have is that during a holiday they are chained to the chalet. We can guarantee you that at Kololo Game Reserve this is definitively not the case. The game drives on Kololo are carried out with a game drive vehicle accompanied by an experienced ranger. A special ramp makes it easy to board the vehicle from the wheelchair.

Additional Services
Kololo highly appreciates the welfare of our guests. Kololo therefore offers its guests some additional services: Telephone & Free Wifi Internet, baby sitting service and laundry service.

Kololo offers its guests a modern VOIP-telephone system. From the reception, the restaurant, the conference room and all the chalets and villa's (except Impala) the system can be used. From these locations you also have access to our Free Wireless Internet. But remember: you are in the African bush. Extreme weather conditions can cause systems to fail from time to time.
