Time + Tide King Lewanika Lodge

One of the earliest protected areas in Africa, Liuwa Plain was proclaimed a game reserve in the early 1880’s by the king of the Lozi people, King Lewanika. Here, on this broad grass canvas, the annual floodwaters host a pageant of wild beauty that throbs to the beat of the royal drums.

One of Africa’s greatest secrets, Liuwa Plain is home to the famous Lady Liuwa lion pride and the second biggest wildebeest migration in Africa. Liuwa Plain is unspoilt and exclusive with rare game and a rich natural heritage. This hidden gem is a 2.5 hour flight from Lusaka.

FacilitiesFacilities

Built and operated by Norman Carr Safaris, King Lewanika Lodge was conceptualized in collaboration with our extended safari family, Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, and African Parks, the conservation non-profit that manages Liuwa Plain in partnership with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife and the Barotse Royal Establishment.

AccommodationAccommodation

The only permanent camp in Liuwa Plain National Park, King Lewanika Lodge offers an exclusive and intimate safari experience for those seeking the rare and undiscovered landscapes of Africa.

The camp retains its safari authenticity with canvas drops, indoor and outdoor showers, decks overlooking the vast Liuwa Plain and the use of thatch and grass in the main area. All furniture was curated as a nod to old world safari days, using leather, cotton, and canvas. The villas offer total immersion in the vast landscape, allowing travelers to experience nature's masterpieces in a simple, sustainable, and meaningful way.
