Makumu Private Game Lodge

Makumu Private Game Lodge is an intimate oasis surrounded by the harshness, unpredictability and unspoiled appeal of the African bushveld.

Aptly meaning ‘endless view’ in the Xitsonga language, the Lodge has an elevated position over the vast ‘Big Five’ Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, one of the largest privately owned nature reserves in South Africa that covers some 60 000 hectares, forming part of the greater Kruger National Park.

With the Klaserie river bisecting the reserve on its way to the Olifants River and Mozambique, this unfenced, untamed wilderness has it all - from spectacular scenery, an amazing array of wildlife and an abundance of bird species.

Highlights

Head ranger Alan McSmith is a renowned wilderness guide, tracker and TEDx speaker. Born to guide, Alan's objective has been consistent for the past three decades: to delight in exploring wild African country ‚Äčand encourage a deeper, more meaningful connection between nature and people.

Book an overnight stay in the new eco Tented Bush Camp. Available in the cooler months (March to September), the Makumu fly-camp with no permanent facilities and a near non-existent eco-foot print, brings one back to a safari destination of old Africa.

The rock pool overlooking a watering hole provides the ideal cool-off while spotting any game with a similar idea. Shaded loungers beckon for an afternoon siesta before setting out with the dipping sun in an open landrover. Pearl-spotted owl, giraffe, hyena, wild dog, zebra, warthog, elephant and vervet monkey are amongst the frequent visitors — not forgetting a variety of antelope: kudu, impala, waterbuck and nyala. Back at the all-inclusive lodge, situated above the banks of the Dundee riverbed, the wooden-decked boma offers the perfect spot for evening dining. Situated under the vast African skies, bathed in the gentle light of candles and lanterns, guests can listen to the far-off roar of the lion and the gentle rasping of the leopard while tucking into a delectable meal.

Need to Know

Makumu works well as an exclusive-use safari lodge for up to 12 guests. The sole-use rate provides excellent value for a completely private safari experience.

Book your in-room massage in advance.

Opt for a helicopter transfer to the lodge from Hoedspruit airport - a quick and scenic alternative to the 90 minute road transfer. This can be booked through our Reservations.

AccommodationAccommodation

Three luxurious and beautifully appointed villas, accommodating a maximum of up to 12 guests, ensure an exclusive blend of absolute comfort, style and privacy. Inspired by the Bushman, Ndebele and Zulu tribes of Africa, the villas are decorated with their own style and character. Each is large and spacious, to reflect the open air and space of the African bush, with a master bedroom and a smaller second bedroom. The en-suite bathrooms have an indoor and outdoor shower, as well as a perfectly positioned ‘tub with a view’, while the wooden decks each boast a hammock perfect for those lazy afternoons.

In the cooler months (March to September), the Makumu fly-camp with no permanent facilities and a near non-existent eco-foot print, brings one back to a safari destination of old Africa. A crackling campfire, moonlit evenings, open-air bucket showers and legendary bush hospitality are all part of the experience. Explore the mysterious wildlands of the Klaserie on foot or in an open game drive vehicle.
